Article content

Jordan signed the final technical and legal agreement for the National Conveyance Project, completing a major step toward financial close and construction.

Prime Minister Dr. Jafar Hassan witnessed the signing of the final technical and legal agreement for the Aqaba-Amman Water Desalination and Conveyance Project - the National Conveyance Project - at the Prime Ministry. The agreement followed an extensive government process to strengthen the project's financing terms and improve its technical, engineering and contractual framework. The project will establish a desalination facility on the Gulf of Aqaba capable of producing 300 million cubic meters of drinking water annually, together with a major conveyance system extending north toward Amman and other areas. The project also incorporates renewable energy to supply part of its electricity requirements and reduce the energy footprint associated with desalination and long-distance pumping. The National Conveyance Project is being implemented through a public-private partnership framework and combines government oversight, private investment and international financing and development support. The project is expected to provide approximately 40% of Jordan's drinking-water needs. The signing completed a critical technical and legal stage and advanced the project toward financial close and commencement of construction.
