Jordan and the Netherlands signed a EUR 31 million grant agreement to support financing of the Aqaba-Amman Water Desalination and Conveyance Project. Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Zeina Toukan signed the agreement with Dutch Ambassador to Jordan Harry Verweij, representing the Dutch state-owned development financier Invest International, in the presence of Minister of Water and Irrigation Eng. Raed Abu Saud and the European Investment Bank representative in Jordan. The European Investment Bank will manage the grant through its Water Sector Fund. The contribution forms part of international support mobilised for the project and reflects continued cooperation with Jordan's development partners to address structural water scarcity. The National Conveyance Project will desalinate Red Sea water at the Gulf of Aqaba and convey potable water north, providing a sustainable new source of drinking water and reducing pressure on Jordan's existing groundwater and surface-water resources. The project is designed to produce 300 million cubic meters of drinking water annually, strengthening Jordan's long-term resilience to water scarcity and climate pressures.
